The 02/23/13 Joy Jar

Today started out good because moi got a haircut and along with the cut, a head massage. Moi left the salon smiling and got on the bus. The bus driver gave her a smile, she smiled back. Next, moi went to lunch and got Kung Pai Chicken, she smiled at the person behind the counter and they smiled back. Next, moi went to J.C. Penney and got cookware on clearance. Moi smiled at the sales clerk and the sales clerk smiled back when moi told her how much she loved the store because they always have awesome sales. To think, the smiles started because my hairstylist gave moi a great haircut because she likes moi as a client because moi seems so happy. Life is circular. Today’s deposit in the ‘Joy Jar’ is a smile.

Moi is basically a ‘bus chick’ and rides the bus everywhere. Moi also does a fair amount of walking to get around as well. Today, was one of those glorious late winter days when the sun came out and warmed everything. Running endless errands and walking to and fro was effortless. Ideas flowed as well. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is walking for the pure joy of walking.

Moi was thinking about all the ways one can eat cheese. One can put cheese on tacos, make a sandwich with cheese and top a salad. Cheese can be melted on just about anything and used for fondue. A slice of cheese and an apple slice is wonderful. Everyone’s favorite mac and cheese recipe will definitely please crowds. The varieties of cheese are endless. Even if local news is often summarized as ‘if it bleeds, it leads,’ moi still watches local news and national news as well. PBS is a great source of intelligent opinion. Additionally, moi reads current event articles from across the political spectrum. The news might sometimes make one want to stick their head in the sand, but knowing is better than not knowing. Watching the GRAMMY AWARD SHOW, Carrie Underwood just accepted an award in a classy dress with a reputed $31 million dollar necklace around her neck. There are more sparkles and sequins at the show than the late Liberace could have ever imagined. The nominees at the show are living a fantasy. Fantasy is sometimes good, but it is a place that one can’t live in all the time. Reality has to be a part of existence. Tomorrow, Carrie Underwood will be without the necklace, the jeweler will probably reclaim it after the last after party. Still, a fantasy can be useful. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is just enough fantasy to spice up reality.

Hard to believe but, the first day of Spring is March 20 and Daylight Savings Time starts in March as well. The news reports are about a blizzard in New York and New England. Fall means that one begins to think about colder weather and the need for sweaters. In many parts of the country where there are clearly defined seasons, people store their sweaters. In Seattle, one keeps their sweaters handy until at least August. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is a warm sweater.

Moi is a member of the Seattle Free Lances which is a writer’s group based in Seattle. She works on membership for the group. One of her duties was to oversee a directory for the group. That task is finished and the directory has been published and ready to be distributed. Looking at the directory, one can trace the printed word from Gutenberg to those high tech laser printers which produce all sorts of materials. The printed word allows people to share information, knowledge, silliness or whatever. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is the printed word.

Moi goes to the Seattle Public Library several times a week. The library is one of the few places in society where all types and classes of people occupy the same space. The Seattle Public Library is an urban library and has as regulars a fair share of the homeless, mentally ill, and those who may have had too much of that as patrons. The librarians treat all as valued patrons, the library is a welcoming place. It occurred to moi when she went to the public restroom that quite often those who use the restroom have all of their belongings with them. It occurred to moi that it is difficult to live if you don’t have access to bathroom facilities. Most people in America don’t think about not having a bathroom, but many have that worry. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is a private bathroom.
