Almost every day moi uses a fork. It is one of those things that one takes for granted. For some reason, moi stopped to look at a fork today and thought-this makes eating so much easier for moi. Other cultures may have different eating implements, but moi is comfortable with a fork. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is a fork.

Civilization has taught us to eat with a fork, but even now if nobody is around we use our fingers.”

Will Rodgers

Is it progress if a cannibal uses a knife and fork?”

Stanislaw Lee

Fork: An instrument used chiefly for the purpose of putting dead animals into the mouth.”

Ambrose Bierce

Manners are a sensitive awareness of the feelings of others. If you have that awareness, you have good manners, no matter what fork you use.”

Emily Post

The world was my oyster but I used the wrong fork

Oscar Wilde”

NAKED Lunch — a frozen moment when everyone sees what is on the end of every fork.”

Every Tuesday moi goes to a prayer group which meets at 6:30 a.m. She has been going for several weeks. Maybe she hasn’t gotten better, but she hasn’t gotten worse and that is a good think. It is good to be part of a community and to know the healing power of prayer. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is the healing power of prayer.

Wherever pragmatism exits in the church, there is always a corresponding de-emphasis on Christ’s sufficiency, God’s sovereignty, biblical integrity, the power of prayer, and Spirit-led ministries. The result is a man-centered ministry that attempts to accomplish divine purposes by superficial programs and human methodology rather than by the Word or the power of the Spirit.

John MacArthur

I pray on the principle that wine knocks the cork out of a bottle.  There is an inward fermentation, and there must be a vent.

Henry Ward Beecher

God punishes us mildly by ignoring our prayers and severely by answering them.

Richard J. Needham

When we pray to God we must be seeking nothing – nothing.

Saint Francis of Assisi

“Give us this day our daily bread” is probably the most perfectly constructed and useful sentence ever set down in the English language.

P.J. Wingate

Prayer does not change God, but it changes him who prays.

Søren Kierkegaard

No one is a firmer believer in the power of prayer than the devil; not that he practices it, but he suffers from it.

Guy H. King

Trouble and perplexity drive me to prayer and prayer drives away perplexity and trouble.

Philip Melanchthen

Don’t pray when it rains if you don’t pray when the sun shines.

Satchel Paige, 1974

Today there was much sadness about as another manifestation of the evil which lies in the souls of some people erupted into deadly violence at the Boston Marathon. Perhaps, it was the walk mid-day which was a daily ritual and which exposes moi to the bits of nature that the city dweller grabs. There are buds on the trees and that signals renewal except in the souls that are so evil renewal is not possible. But, for most of us with souls capable of renewal and life, the buds are a welcoming sight. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ are the buds of Spring.

Thus having prepared their buds
against a sure winter
the wise trees
stand sleeping in the cold.”

William Carlos Williams

“The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way.  Some see Nature all ridicule and deformity, and some scarce see Nature at all.  But to the eyes of the man of imagination, Nature is Imagination itself.”
William Blake, 1799, The Letters

“God is the experience of looking at a tree and saying, “Ah!” ”
Joseph Campbell

“The groves were God’s first temples.”
William Cullen Bryant, A Forest Hymn

“The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Here and there you’d see a tree that was budding or grass trying to grow. There was hope.”

Carolyn Hunter

Everyone thought we had settled into a predictable Seattle weather pattern of showers and drizzle. Just as one was ready to settle in, Mother Nature had a delicious surprise. A sun break. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is unexpected sunshine.

The world goes up and the world goes down, the sunshine follows the rain; and yesterday’s sneer and yesterday’s frown can never come over again.

Charles Kingsley

Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.

John Ruskin

Even on a cloudy day the sun is shining somewhere!
Unknown

Most of the shadows of this life are caused by our standing in our own sunshine.
Henry Ward Beecher

Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.
James Matthew Barrie

Keep your face always towards the sunshine – and shadows will fall behind you.
Walt Whitman

Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.

One of moi’s favorite television programs is ‘The Voice’ which is a reality show where contestants compete using only their voice before four celebrity judges who have their back to the contestants. The goal is to get at least one judge to turn around. Since the judges do not know what the contestant looks like, all they have upon which to make a judgment is the voice of the contestant. Voice is not only the vocal sound, but perspective, and the outlook of the contestant and that comes through in the performance. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is moi’s voice.

If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.
Vincent Van Gogh

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.
Steve Jobs

Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with deeper meaning.
Maya Angelou

I learned patience, perseverance, and dedication. Now I really know myself, and I know my voice. It’s a voice of pain and victory.
Anthony Hamilton

People have to talk about something just to keep their voice boxes in working order so they’ll have good voice boxes in case there’s ever anything really meaningful to say.
Kurt Vonnegut

Give every man thy ear, but few thy voice.
William Shakespeare

When freedom does not have a purpose, when it does not wish to know anything about the rule of law engraved in the hearts of men and women, when it does not listen to the voice of conscience, it turns against humanity and society.
Pope John Paul II

The human voice can never reach the distance that is covered by the still small voice of conscience.
Mahatma Gandhi

Today was simply a kick back day. There was nothing in particular on the agenda except to enjoy the day and evening. Tonight, watching the tube and eating cheese and crackers and drinking a beer. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is ice cold beer.

He was a wise man who invented beer.
Plato

The big compliment came from the beer drinkers who didn’t know me. They wouldn’t drink or move when I sang. If they had their glasses in mid-air, the glasses wouldn’t come down.
Ethel Waters

I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer.”
Abraham Lincoln

Never underestimate how much assistance, how much satisfaction, how much comfort, how much soul and transcendence there might be in a well-made taco and a cold bottle of beer.”
Tom Robbins,
Jitterbug Perfume

Beer’s intellectual. What a shame so many idiots drink it.”
Ray Bradbury,
The October Country

I don’t think I’ve drunk enough beer to understand that.”
Terry Pratchett,
The Last Continent

Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.”
Benjamin Franklin

Just as there is nothing like a dame, there is nothing like great musical theater. Moi saw ‘Jersey Boys’ which is the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. It is probably one of the best musicals ever written. It has a great story, great music, a love story, it is fast paced and taunt. The musical is a uniquely American art form. A really good musical has you singing as you leave the theatre. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is the musical.

Let’s sing our way out of this”
Isabel Fraire

I chose and my world was shaken. So what. The choice might have been mistaken, but choosing was not.”
Stephen Sondheim “Sunday in the Park with George”

In musical theater you have to be very big and very animated, while film and television are more toned down.

Kevin Richardson

I’ve never had any feeling of disconnection between the classical theater, or the contemporary theater, or musical theater, or the thing that we call opera.

Trevor Nunn

If an American audience is given a serious musical theater piece that is well produced, dramatically gripping and wonderfully acted, they’ll respond to it.

Carlisle Floyd

ll the best performers bring to their role something more, something different than what the author put on paper. That’s what makes theatre live. That’s why it persists.
Stephen Sondheim

I think there is no world without theatre.
Edward Bond

The theatre is the involuntary reflex of the ideas of the crowd.
Sarah Bernhardt

I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.
Oscar Wilde

I don’t think theater is dying, and musicals are a great American art form. We’ve got apple pie, jazz and musical theater.
Laura Benanti

Have you ever noticed when one is looking for the mate to a pair of socks that match an outfit you want to wear, one sock is missing from the sock drawer. Moi spent a long time looking for a sock and still couldn’t find the sock she was looking for. Today’s deposit in the ‘Joy Jar’ is finding matching socks when moi wants them.

One can never have enough socks,” said Dumbledore. “Another Christmas has come and gone and I didn’t get a single pair. People will insist on giving me books.”
J.K. Rowling,
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Granny always said finding justice was as tough as putting socks on a rooster.”
Jessica Maria Tuccelli, Glow

Choose your friends by their character and your socks by their color. Choosing your socks by their character makes no sense, and choosing your friends by their color is unthinkable.

Unknown

Both of your socks should always be the same color, Or they should at least both be fairly dark”

Dave Barry

I washed a sock. Then I put it in the dryer. When I took it out, it was gone.”

Rod Schmidt

You couldn’t get far in my socks, never mind walking a mile in my shoes.

Moi is a ‘bus chick’ and rides public transpotation ALL OVER Seattle. She writes and watches people. The buses in the Puget Sound region are run by a variety of agencies and that may be the problem. Moi mostly rides METRO which gets her there. The gridlock which stymies Congress also stymies Washington government. Many folk who take the bus may see their service cut because of the way public transportation is financed in Washington. Many will consider buying some gas guzzling clunker and further crowd the road. The powers that be don’t undertand the value of a really good public transportation system. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is a public transportation system.

You can’t understand a city without using its public transportation system.”

Erol Ozan

Public transit situates us so that we are given license to accept what’s right in front of us, but will likely arouse our desire to compare our narrative to someone else’s, to give ourselves permission to speculate upon a person’s private space, or life, with no fear of recourse or punishment.”

Julie Wilson, Seen Reading

The person whose problems are all behind them is probably a school bus driver”

Unknown

A bus is a vehicle that runs twice as fast when you are after it as when you are in it”

Unknown

In the dime stores and bus stations, People talk of situations, read books, repeat quotations, Draw conclusions on the wall”

Bob Dylan

Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.”

The calendar says Spring, but it is chilly in Seattle and with the kind of damp clammyness that goes through you. Nothing is better on a cold Winter day or for that matter, a cold Spring day than chicken soup. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is chicken soup.

An idealist is one who, on noticing that roses smell better than a cabbage, concludes that it will also make better soup.
H. L. Mencken

Only the pure in heart can make a good soup.
Ludwig van Beethoven

My greatest strength is common sense. I’m really a standard brand – like Campbell’s tomato soup or Baker’s chocolate.
Katharine Hepburn

A first-rate soup is more creative than a second-rate painting.
Abraham Maslow

Good manners: The noise you don’t make when you’re eating soup.
Bennett Cerf

I live on good soup, not on fine words.
Moliere

Among hot beverages, we know of nothing better than leisurely sipping a bowl of steaming chicken soup
