The 05/19/13 Joy Jar

18 May

Summer begins in June. Summer is a time of renewal and growth. Moi has certain goals for this coming summer. She wants to work on major writing projects. Many writers are introverts as is moi. This summer she also wants to increase her networks. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is personal expansion.

It occurs to me that our survival may depend upon our talking to one another.”
Dan Simmons, Hyperion

Social networking is about building people up in your network NOT tearing them down”
Tasha Turner

What people say and feel about you when you’ve left a room is precisely your job while you are in it.”
Rasheed Ogunlaru

Becoming well known (at least among your prospects & connections) is the most valuable element in the connection process.”
Jeffrey Gitomer

The choice isn’t between success and failure; it’s between choosing risk and striving for greatness, or risking nothing and being certain of mediocrity.”
Keith farrazzi

The leader goes also to the less traditional networking meetings. The manager participates in networking events organized and promoted.”

Moi has a couple of mugs that she uses all the time. They have been around so long that she considers them as friends. One can put tea or coffee in them and they provide the perfect complement to whatever beverage. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is moi’s favorite mugs.

Clay is molded to form a cup, But it is on its non-being that the utility of the cup depends. Doors and windows are cut out to make a room, But it is on its non-being that the utility of the room depends. Therefore turn being into advantage, and turn non-being into utility.”

Lao Tzu

When the cup is full, carry it even”

Scottish Proverb

Its amazing how the World begins to change through the eyes of a cup of coffee!!”

Donna A. Favor

A pinch of praise is worth a pound of scorn. A dash of encouragement is more helpful than a dipper of pessimism. A cup of kindness is better than a cupboard of criticism.”

William Arthur Ward

Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything that is beautiful; for beauty is God’s handwriting – a wayside sacrament. Welcome it in every fair face, in every fair sky, in every fair flower, and thank God for it as a cup of blessing.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

The mere chink of cups and saucers turns the mind to happy repose”

‘They’ whoever ‘they’ are – well, ‘they’ are trying to force all transaction online. One can get e-cards, pay bills online and of course, there is e-mail. Still, there is nothing like the handwritten word and sometimes one needs an envelope to send something to someone that can’t be sent online. You remember envelopes exist when you need one. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is the envelope.

For most men, life is a search for the proper manila envelope in which to get themselves filed.
Clifton Fadiman

A good many young writers make the mistake of enclosing a stamped, self-addressed envelope, big enough for the manuscript to come back in. This is too much of a temptation to the editor.
Ring Lardner

Letters are expectation packaged in an envelope.
Shana Alexander

The man who works for the gold in the job rather than for the money in the pay envelope, is the fellow who gets on”

Joseph French Johnson

In all things that involve social pressures, if we want to see change we have to force the envelope outwards.”

Gary Lee Phillips

ENVELOPE, n. The coffin of a document; the scabbard of a bill; the husk of a remittance; the bed-gown of a love-letter.”

Brushing one’s teeth is something that is done at least twice daily. Most of the time one doesn’t think about teeth unless they hurt or you don’t have any. Except for wisdom teeth, thankfully moi still has her teeth. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ are moi’s teeth.

All the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me… You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.

Walt Disney

A man begins cutting his wisdom teeth the first time he bites off more than he can chew.

Herb Caen

The man with a toothache thinks everyone happy whose teeth are sound. The poverty-stricken man makes the same mistake about the rich man.

George Bernard Shaw

“Teeth aren’t pearly, until you smile.”

Anthony Liccione

Life is short.

Smile while you still have teeth.”

Every Tuesday moi joins a prayer group in the morning. Today, after leaving the group, moi thought about the Bible passage Joshua 24:15:

New International Version (©2011)
But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”

Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is service.

Galatians 5:13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was: “If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?” But the good Samaritan reversed the question: “If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?”Martin Luther King Jr

Prayer in action is love, and love in action is service. Try to give unconditionally whatever a person needs in the moment. The point is to do something, however small, and show you care through your actions by giving your time … We are all God’s children so it is important to share His gifts. Do not worry about why problems exist in the world – just respond to people’s needs … We feel what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean, but that ocean would be less without that drop.

Mother Teresa

If we do not lay out ourselves in the service of mankind whom should we serve?”-

John Adams

It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life, that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Moi went to a kitchen store recently and say a beautiful set of bamboo cutting boards. Bamboo is renewable and it grows rapidly. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is the beautiful bamboo plant and what it represents.

Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind.
Bruce Lee

Study the teachings of the pine tree, the bamboo, and the plum blossom. The pine is evergreen, firmly rooted, and venerable. The bamboo is strong, resilient, unbreakable. The plum blossom is hardy, fragrant, and elegant. Morihei Ueshiba

Be like the bamboo: 7 lessons from the Japanese forest

(1) Bend but don’t break. Be flexible yet firmly rooted
One of the most impressive things about the bamboo in the forest is how they sway with even the slightest breeze. This gentle swaying movement with the wind is a symbol of humility…. T

(2) Remember: What looks weak is strong
The body of a single bamboo tree is not large by any means when compared to the other much larger trees in the forest. It may not look impressive at first sight at all. But the plants endure cold winters and extremely hot summers and are sometimes the only trees left standing in the aftermath of a typhoon. They may not reach the heights of the other trees, but they are strong and stand tall in extreme weather. Bamboo is not as fragile as it may appear, not by a long shot….

(3) Be always ready
Unlike other types of wood which take a good deal of processing and finishing, bamboo needs little of that. As the great Aikido master Kensho Furuya says in Kodo: Ancient Ways, “The warrior, like bamboo, is ever ready for action.” In presentation or other professional activities too, through training and practice, we can develop in our own way a state of being ever ready.

(4) Unleash your power to spring back
Bamboo is a symbol of good luck and one of the symbols of the New Year celebrations in Japan. The important image of snow-covered bamboo represents the ability to spring back after experiencing adversity….

(5) Find wisdom in emptiness
It is said that in order to learn, the first step is to empty ourselves of our preconceived notions. One can not fill a cup which is already full. The hollow insides of the bamboo reminds us that we are often too full of ourselves and our own conclusions; we have no space for anything else. In order to receive knowledge and wisdom from both nature and people, we have to be open to that which is new and different. When you empty your mind of your prejudices and pride and fear, you become open to the possibilities.

(6) Commit to (continuous) growth
Bamboo trees are among the fastest-growing plants in the world. It does not matter who you are — or where you are — today, you have amazing potential for growth….

(7) Express usefulness through simplicity

Aikido master Kensho Furuya says that “The bamboo in its simplicity expresses its usefulness. Man should do the same.” Indeed, we spend a lot of our time trying to show how smart we are, perhaps to convince others — and ourselves — that we are worthy of their attention and praise. Often we complicate the simple to impress and we fail to simplify the complex out of fear that others may know what we know…. http://www.presentationzen.com/presentationzen/2010/07/be-like-the-bamboo-trees-lessons-from-the-japanese-forest.html

The taller the bamboo grows, the lower it bends.

The past few days in Seattle have been glorious with sun and pleasant temperatures. Rain is predicted to start tomorrow and last for the next several days. A Seattle rain cleans the air and plumps up the skin. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is the Seattle rain which cleans the air.

The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.
Dolly Parton

Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby.
Langston Hughes

Some people walk in the rain, others just get wet.
Roger Miller

It ain’t no use putting up your umbrella till it rains.”

Alice Caldwell Rice

And when it rains on your parade, look up rather than down. Without the rain, there would be no rainbow.

Although the calendar still says Spring, moi took her winter coats to the cleaners, finally convinced that she probably won’t need them for the next couple of months. The past couple of days have been glorious and more than enough to whet one’s anticipation of Summer. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is the anticipation of summer.

And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.”
F. Scott Fitzgerald,
The Great Gatsby

Spring passes and one remembers one’s innocence.
Summer passes and one remembers one’s exuberance.
Autumn passes and one remembers one’s reverence.
Winter passes and one remembers one’s perseverance.”
Yoko Ono

Some of the best memories are made in flip flops.”
Kellie Elmore

One benefit of Summer was that each day we had more light to read by.”
Jeannette Walls,
The Glass Castle

Long stormy spring-time, wet contentious April, winter chilling the lap of very May; but at length the season of summer does come.
Thomas Carlyle

In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.

Some of the most intolerant folk are those who are attempting to persuade others to their particular view or cause. Many folk simply want to make others carbon copies of them. Apparently, deviation from their ideas makes them insecure, they don’t feel that they have been ‘accepted’ whatever that means. The Macmillan Dictionary defines tolerance:

the attitude of someone who is willing to accept someone elses beliefs, way of life, etc. without criticizing them even if they disagree with them

Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is true tolerance.

Laws alone can not secure freedom of expression; in order that every man present his views without penalty there must be spirit of tolerance in the entire population.”
Albert Einstein

It’s an universal law– intolerance is the first sign of an inadequate education. An ill-educated person behaves with arrogant impatience, whereas truly profound education breeds humility.”
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

In order to have faith in his own path, he does not need to prove that someone else’s path is wrong.”
Paulo Coelho,
Warrior of the Light

Tolerance isn’t about not having beliefs. It’s about how your beliefs lead you to treat people who disagree with you.”
Timothy Keller

If I do not believe as you believe, it proves that you do not believe as I believe, and that is all that it proves.”
Thomas Paine

In the world it is called Tolerance, but in hell it is called Despair…the sin that believes in nothing, cares for nothing, seeks to know nothing, interferes with nothing, enjoys nothing, hates nothing, finds purpose in nothing, lives for nothing, and remains alive because there is nothing for which it will die.”

Moi’s computer was down and out for several hours. Moi needed the rest. So, whatever. A computer these days is something one really notices when it is not there. Today’s deposit into the ‘Joy Jar’ is the return of moi’s computer.

Computers are useless. They can only give you answers.
Pablo Picasso

Computers are like Old Testament gods; lots of rules and no mercy.
Joseph Campbell

I do not fear computers. I fear the lack of them.
Isaac Asimov

The real danger is not that computers will begin to think like men, but that men will begin to think like computers.
Sydney J. Harris

Computers are magnificent tools for the realization of our dreams, but no machine can replace the human spark of spirit, compassion, love, and understanding.
